3 Practical Tips to Deal With UTI Effectively

By Dr. Chetna Jain

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections seen in women, though men and older adults can be affected too. Burning while urinating, frequent urges to pass urine, lower abdominal discomfort, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine are some early signs that shouldn’t be ignored.

The good news? With the right approach, UTIs can be managed and prevented effectively. Here are three essential tips I recommend to my patients.

1. Hydration Is Your First Line of Defence

Drinking enough water helps flush bacteria out of the urinary tract naturally. When urine flow is regular, bacteria find it harder to settle and multiply.

What you should do:

  • Drink 2.5–3 litres of water daily (unless medically restricted)

  • Don’t hold urine for long periods

  • Empty your bladder completely each time

Good hydration alone can significantly reduce discomfort in mild UTIs and supports faster recovery when combined with treatment.

2. Maintain Proper Intimate Hygiene (Without Overdoing It)

Poor hygiene can increase the risk of UTIs, but excessive cleaning can be just as harmful.

Healthy hygiene habits include:

  • Always cleaning from front to back

  • Avoiding scented intimate washes or harsh soaps

  • Wearing breathable cotton underwear

  • Changing out of damp clothes quickly

Remember, the vaginal area has a natural protective balance — disrupting it can invite infections.

3. Never Self-Medicate — Get Timely Medical Treatment

One of the biggest mistakes people make is ignoring symptoms or taking leftover antibiotics. This can lead to recurrent UTIs or antibiotic resistance.

When to see a doctor immediately:

  • Burning or pain persists beyond a day

  • Fever, back pain, or blood in urine appears

  • UTIs keep coming back

  • You’re pregnant, diabetic, or elderly

A urine test helps identify the exact cause, allowing targeted and effective treatment.

A Gentle Reminder

UTIs are common, but they are not something you should “just live with.” Early care prevents complications and keeps your urinary health on track.

If you’re experiencing symptoms or frequent infections, consult a qualified doctor for personalised guidance.

Your comfort, safety, and long-term health matter.
